Teeth Extraction

Explainer Video

Teeth extraction is a dental procedure that involves the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It’s a common practice used to address a variety of dental issues, including severe decay, infection, overcrowding, or preparation for orthodontic treatment. While the goal is always to save natural teeth, extractions are sometimes necessary to maintain or improve oral health. Modern dentistry offers various methods to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable and pain-free as possible, utilizing advanced techniques and anesthesia to minimize discomfort and facilitate a smooth recovery.

Teeth Extraction Procedures

The process of teeth extraction typically involves:
1. Consultation and X-ray

An initial examination and X-ray to assess the tooth's condition and plan the extraction.

2. Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area and ensure comfort during the procedure.

3. Extraction

The dentist uses specialized tools to gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. In some cases, a simple extraction is performed; in others, a surgical extraction may be necessary.

4. Caring for the Site

Immediate aftercare involves placing gauze over the extraction site to aid in clot formation and promote healing.

5. Post-operative Instructions

Patients receive guidance on how to care for the extraction site to prevent complications.

Frequently asked questions
and their answers

Common reasons for tooth extraction include severe tooth decay/injury, advanced periodontal disease, teeth impaction, to create space before orthodontic treatment, or for teeth interfering with dentures.

The dentist will numb the area being worked on. Instruments will be used to loosen and safely remove the tooth and surrounding tissue if needed. Stitches may be placed to aid healing.

Local anesthesia is used so the extraction procedure itself should not be painful. Some residual discomfort may remain once the numbing wears off. Pain medication can help manage this.

It takes 7-10 days for the extraction site to initially heal. However, the bone and gum tissue continue to heal and reform over the next several weeks to months as they adjust to the missing tooth space.

Signs of possible dry socket or infection include severe throbbing pain not relieved by medication, foul odor or taste from the socket, fever, and redness/swelling that worsens after a few days.

A soft food diet is recommended for at least 1-2 weeks after an extraction. Very hard, crunchy, or spicy foods should be avoided until the area has fully healed to prevent pain and food impaction.
