Zygoma Implant

Explainer Video

Zygoma implants offer a revolutionary solution for individuals with severe upper jawbone loss who are unable to receive conventional dental implants. Unlike traditional implants that are anchored in the jawbone, zygoma implants are longer and anchored in the zygomatic bone, more commonly known as the cheekbone. This technique provides a stable foundation for implant-supported dentures or bridges in patients with insufficient bone density, eliminating the need for extensive bone grafting procedures. Zygoma implants are celebrated for their ability to restore functionality and aesthetics to those who previously had limited options due to severe bone loss.

Zygoma Implant Procedures

The zygoma implant procedure involves several steps:
1. Comprehensive Evaluation

Detailed assessment including imaging to evaluate bone structure and plan the implant placement.

2. Surgical Placement

Under anesthesia, the implants are surgically inserted into the zygomatic bone.

3. Healing Period

A period of healing is required for the implants to integrate with the bone.

4. Attachment of Prosthesis

Once healed, a dental prosthesis (denture or bridge) is securely attached to the implants.

Frequently asked questions
and their answers

A zygoma implant is a specialized dental implant anchored into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) for patients with severe maxillary (upper jaw) bone loss where regular implants are not possible.

Patients with significant maxillary bone loss due to trauma, tumors, or resorption who cannot have conventional dental implants are candidates. Adequate zygomatic bone is required.

Zygoma implants are much longer and anchoring in the zygoma allows placement despite minimal maxillary bone. The process and components also differ from conventional implants.

Success rates of zygoma implants exceed 90% over 10+ years when properly placed. They can provide lasting rehabilitation for complex cases.

Zygoma implants are only used in the upper/maxillary jaw as they anchor into the cheekbone which is only present in the maxilla. The mandible has no zygomatic bone.

Initial recovery takes up to 2 weeks. Patients experience swelling and discomfort for several days post-surgery. Final prosthetic restoration is done a few months later once implants integrate.
