Gingival crown lengthening is a dental procedure aimed at reshaping the gum tissue, and sometimes the underlying bone, to expose more of a tooth’s surface. Often considered a cosmetic procedure, it’s also used to improve the structural integrity of a tooth for further restorative or cosmetic dentistry, such as crowns or bridges. This technique can address a “gummy” smile, where an excessive gum overlay makes the teeth appear short, or it can provide a solution for teeth that are broken below the gum line. With precise execution, gingival crown lengthening can dramatically enhance the aesthetic balance and functionality of your smile.
Initial evaluation to assess the need for the procedure and discuss the desired outcome.

Gingival crown lengthening is a procedure to remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. It is done for restorative or esthetic purposes.
The crown lengthening procedure usually takes 1-2 hours depending on the amount of gum tissue that needs removal and the number of teeth involved.
The area being worked on is numbed with local anesthesia so the lengthening procedure itself is not painful. Some mild discomfort may occur during the healing period.
Typical recovery includes gum soreness, swelling, and sensitivity to hot and cold for 1-2 weeks. Proper oral hygiene during healing is crucial. Complete remodeling takes 2-3 months.
Initial results are visible right away in terms of increased tooth structure exposed. Full esthetic results are seen after a couple of months once gums recontour and heal completely.
With proper oral hygiene, results can be long-lasting. However, some recurrence of excess gum tissue is possible over time, which may require periodic additional procedures.
